What She Built

What She Built

Matt and Kellie have worked in the construction industry for over a decade. They began What She Built after the birth of their daughter, showcasing the stories of real women in construction as a way to inspire the next generation of female builders.

The CLIENT

Matt and Kellie came to us with a project vision inspired by their daughter and the next generation. They were in the process of creating a children’s book with real-life female heroes that build. Having both worked in the construction industry, they’d met countless women shaping the industry in powerful ways.

The project

What She Built is a combination of strength and femininity. It pulls on the idea of legacy, relying on the drive of the women who came before, the tenacity of present day women, and the curiosity of our children.

We broke this project up into two different parts:

  1. The initial brand dive, really honing in on mission, values, characteristics, and the high-level story.

  2. A portrait study into each of the selected women, defining an illustration style that celebrates uniqueness and diversity.

Our Role:
  • creative direction
  • brand development
  • brand strategy
  • copywriting
  • web design
  • illustration
